ATCA Shelf Supports 40GbE Backplane and Two Extra Payload Slots

Waterloo, Ontario, January 28, 2015  –  Pixus Technologies, a supplier of electronic packaging systems and components and the exclusive North American supplier of Rittal Electronic Packaging products, has introduced a new 6U AdvancedTCA (ATCA) SlotSaver Shelf, the PXS0640, that gains 2 slots of payload card usage and features a 40GBASE-KR4 backplane for 40GbE performance.   The density, full redundancy, and versatile power configuration are well suited for telecom, military/aerospace, and high-end networking/computing applications.

The PXS0640 SlotSaver features shelf managers that also employ dual redundant switch functionality.   An AdvancedTCA horizontal shelf would typically have to dedicate 2 slots for redundant switch cards, thus offering only four payload slots.  With the PXS0640, the combined switch/shelf manager functionality provides a full 6 payload slots for a 50% increase in the compute density.

The PXS0640 features a push-pull cooling configuration for exceptional thermal management.  All of the Field Replaceable Units (FRUs) are hot-swappable, including the Cooling Units, washable filter, Power Entry Modules (PEMs), Shelf Managers (ShMM), and AC power supplies. The shelf offers both AC and DC options – up to 4x AC power supplies in an N+1 configuration and up to 2x DC PEMs.  In fact, the AC and DC power can be running at the same time for swapping modules in the field.  A 5U shelf with DC-only power is also available.

The 6-slot ATCA backplane offers a dual-star configuration, with an option to add a full mesh, and an option to add a replicated mesh on the node slots.  The shelf manager offers the unique integration of 40GbE and 1GbE layer three managed switches on the same module. With two combined shelf managers and switches in the system, there is full redundancy and failover for the shelf managers and switches.
