–Leading open standards organization invites participation in latest specifications for high-performance computing and for hardware platform management; exhibits at MOSA Summit 2026

WAKEFIELD, Mass.— September 22, 2026 — PICMG, the leading open standards consortium for modular, scalable edge computing, today announced the formation of two technical working groups that will benefit the design, deployment and ongoing management of embedded systems: one working group will update the COM-HPC® specification for emerging market segments, such as edge AI, robotics and machine vision. The other, metaHPM, will modernize the unified, interoperable and scalable hardware platform management middleware layer and align stakeholders from across industry.

COM-HPC 1.4

COM-HPC is a computer-on-module (COM) specification for high-performance computing (HPC) that streamlines the deployment of real-time embedded computing platforms while also enabling long-lifecycle upgradability of processor and memory subsystems. Offering a proven pathway to enabling server-class bandwidth, power and performance for high-end edge AI and IoT applications, the COM-HPC 1.4 technical working group will tailor the popular COM-HPC specification family for applications such as robotics and AI-enabled machine vision.

“In establishing a technical working group for PICMG’s COM-HPC 1.4 specification, we aim to offer an open, standardized yet highly agile approach for the design of Physical AI and Edge AI applications. We’re building upon the strength of COM-HPC to offer field-proven interoperability to developers without the constraints of captive systems,” said Christian Eder, director of market intelligence at congatec and chairman of PICMG’s COM-HPC workgroup. “The COM-HPC 1.4 revision will give developers a broad choice of suppliers, offering a variety of embedded modules and different processor architectures — including x86, Arm, FPGAs and RISC-V — on standards-based platforms that enable product differentiation and customization at the carrier board level.

“Unlike proprietary ecosystems, COM-HPC gives developers secure upgrade paths, flexibility, scalable performance, and the form factor they demand via an open computing specification they can trust,” added Eder.

metaHPM

metaHPM is a modern platform management standard that significantly upgrades previous PICMG hardware platform management (HPM) standards by replacing the legacy Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) that has served industry well for more than two decades. metaHPM allows software developers to make full use of popular enterprise-level platform-management software, like Redfish, which provides capabilities enabled by modern web standards. These standards include RESTful interfaces and JSON-formatted data exchanges — which were never part of IPMI’s design.

metaHPM will also look to extend the structured device modeling and transport-agnostic messaging of PLDM and MCTP to PICMG’s modular and embedded hardware environments.

“Just as PICMG once built on IPMI to deliver a consistent, interoperable management layer, our approach now is to adopt and leverage the Distributed  Management Task Force, or DMTF, technology stack to benefit PICMG stakeholders who appreciate IT-style management platforms,” said Jessica Isquith, president, PICMG. “Investing in metaHPM is yet another example of PICMG joining a rapidly evolving ecosystem instead of maintaining a parallel, isolated management model. That’s good for our members and for embedded and IoT application developers of all kinds.”
