PICMG and Communications Platforms Trade Association Complete Second Successful Interoperability Workshop

November Testing Focused on AMC and MicroTCA

BEAVERTON, Oregon – December 17, 2007 – The Communications Platforms Trade Association (CP-TA) and PICMG teamed up once again in Chicago to host a joint Interoperability Workshop, demonstrating structured testing to industry profiles. PICMG has hosted several Interoperability Workshops in the past, and this is the second time they’ve partnered with CP-TA.

Open to members of PICMG and CP-TA, a total of 19 different companies participated in the workshop to test products, designed to PICMG specifications, for interoperability issues. While some AdvancedTCA testing was done, the workshop focused mainly on MicroTCA and AMC. The results of the workshops are confidential to the companies participating so that the testing can take place in an environment focused on learning and resolving issues.

“We are encouraged to see the continued maturation of AMC and MicroTCA products at these workshops and see how the interop testing helps companies address interoperability issues early in the design process,” said Joe Pavlat, PICMG President. “With the anticipated release of the PICMG Release 3.0 AdvancedTCA specification, we will offer testing for AdvancedTCA, AMC and MicroTCA at our next event.”

“At this event, CP-TA demonstrated for the first time new thermal and manageability test tools for AMC and MicroTCA,” said Nirlay Kundu, CP-TA Compliance Work Group Chair. “We definitely saw the most interest for MicroTCA testing. Many vendors in the early stage of the development process were able to take advantage of the structured testing. It was exciting to use the tools to find bugs early in the design process and enable companies to address interoperability issues right away.”

“CP-TA demonstrated that it is on track on its current roadmap of delivering MicroTCA interoperability specification in Q1 of 2008,” said Todd Keaffaber, CP-TA Technical Work Group Chair.

During the event CP-TA and Polaris Networks demonstrated the new MicroTCA Tester. This test tool, to be released in the near future, incorporates the IPMB analyzer. DegreeC also demonstrated prototype thermal test tools for AMC and MicroTCA.

PICMG and CP-TA will hold future events together and provide testing for products based on the PICMG 3.0 Release 3.0. For more information on the next event, visit PICMG at www.picmg.org, or visit CP-TA at www.cp-ta.org.

PICMG and Communications Platforms Trade Association Wrap Up First Cooperative Interoperability Workshop

June Event Focuses on AdvancedMC® and MicroTCA™

BEAVERTON, Oregon – July 17, 2007 – The Communications Platforms Trade Association (CP-TA) and PICMG teamed up in Chicago during the week of June 11 for their first joint Interoperability Workshop, demonstrating structured testing to industry profiles. PICMG has hosted Interoperability Workshops for its members since the early days of CompactPCI®, but this is the first time it has opened the events to another organization. Previous AdvancedTCA Interoperability Workshops have tested the multi-vendor interoperability of new products designed to the AdvancedTCA specifications.

For this event, participation was open to members of both CP-TA and PICMG. As always, testing was conducted in a protected, confidential environment, allowing participants to test and resolve any inconsistencies. Twenty-five companies and 70 participants joined in interoperability workshops, completing tests for thermal, manageability, data transport and other interoperability issues.

“The detailed preparation and testing carried out at this latest Interoperability Workshop, continues to help drive AdvancedTCA, AdvancedMC and MicroTCA implementations. Resolving interoperability issues early in the design process and in a cooperative environment enables vendors to get products to market faster,” said Joe Pavlat, PICMG President. “We look forward to further cooperation with CP-TA in future events of this kind.”

“The Interoperability Workshop generated additional interest in AdvancedMC and MicroTCA that will help CP-TA address the interoperability issues in these areas much earlier than anticipated in our current roadmap,” said Nirlay Kundu, CP-TA Compliance Work Group Chair. “These events are getting us closer to delivering interoperable building blocks based on open industry specifications and ultimately, helping reduce Network Equipment Providers’ integration challenges.”

During the event, CP-TA demonstrated its improved AdvancedTCA interoperability test tools. The ATCA-Tester from Polaris Networks tested manageability interoperability while Degree Controls, Inc.’s Chassis Scan and Blade Profiler tested thermal interoperability. Further information for the CP-TA test tools can be found at www.cp-ta.org.

PICMG forms Rugged MicroTCA subcommittee
Aimed at the ruggedization of MicroTCA for new markets

WAKEFIELD, Mass., USA – June 18th, 2007 – PICMG has formed the new Rugged MicroTCA subcommittee to investigate and define enhancements to the MicroTCA and AdvancedMC definitions.  The enhancements will enable products to be used in markets where environmental requirements may be much harsher than the telecommunications market, the first target of these specifications.  The committee is called the Rugged MicroTCA subcommittee but it will also address Advanced Mezzanine Cards, which are the building blocks of MicroTCA systems.

The target markets for Rugged MicroTCA are:

  • Commercial and Military Applications including  Airborne, Shipboard, and Ground Mobile Equipment
  • Telco Industry Customer Premise Equipment and Remote Access (such as roadside or pole mounted, no fans)
  • Machine Industry (Rotating machine mounted; no fans; vibration)
  • Transport Industry (Railway; truck, ship, aircraft mounted)
  • Traffic control (roadside, no fans)
  • Security (remote access, no fans)

It is likely that there will not be a single solution for all these markets.   The committee expects its deliverables will be “dot” specifications that layer on top of the base MTCA.0 specification and contain the environmental enhancements needed for a specific set of market applications.   These are likely to include specifications for air cooling, conduction cooling and shock and vibration enhancements.

“MicroTCA has created a huge buzz. There is a large demand to address these issues so it can be used in many more markets” said Mike Franco, the chair of the new subcommittee.

PICMG will publish backgrounders and other documents from the subcommittee on the “Resources” page of www.picmg.org as work progresses.

PICMG adds Management Firmware Upgrade Capability to latest Specifications
PICMG® HPM.1 supports AdvancedTCA®, AdvancedMC™
and MicroTCA™ Systems

WAKEFIELD, Mass., USA - June 7th, 2007 - PICMG has released a new specification that defines an open mechanism for systems to upgrade the resident management software and firmware on the various components and subsystems. Designated PICMG HPM.1, the specification was developed by the existing PICMG 3.0 subcommittee but released as a separate specification so it can also be applied immediately to other PICMG defined architectures, specifically Advanced Mezzanine Cards and MicroTCA systems. This specification is the first from PICMG to augment the hardware platform management (HPM) layer of all three architectures in a single document. PICMG specifications lead the industry in their support for advanced system management technology, which improves system reliability and availability and reduces maintenance costs.

The Intelligent Platform Management Interface specification, which AdvancedTCA uses as the basis for its hardware platform management infrastructure, does not provide any generic mechanism for upgrading management controller firmware. This new specification defines an advanced architecture and corresponding interfaces so that a single upgrade agent can update the firmware in the many management controllers of an entire system, even if the modules in the system come from different vendors.
"HPM.1 adds very useful functionality to AdvancedTCA and MicroTCA systems, along with the AdvancedMC modules they include," said Mark Overgaard of Pigeon Point System and the Chair of the HPM.1 effort. "This framework will allow system integrators to have a single set of tools for upgrading all the IPM Controllers in an entire system. In addition, the HPM.1 architecture ensures that all new compliant FRUs will be automatically supported by the upgrade tools compliant with this specification, and vice versa," he added.

HPM.1 will be provided free to PICMG members and is available for purchase by non-members. More information, including product listings, can be found at www.picmg.org.

To see the latest products based on PICMG specification, visit the PICMG Technologies Showcase at NXTcomm07 in Chicago at Booth 4257. For a listing of Member products based on PICMG specification, click on the "Products" page at www.picmg.org.

PICMG adds Ethernet Fabric to Advanced Mezzanine Card
AMC.2 Specification Adds Ethernet Fabric

WAKEFIELD, Mass., USA – April 9th, 2007 – PICMG, a consortium of more than 450
companies that collaboratively develop open modular computing specifications for
telecommunications and industrial computing applications, announced today that it has released a subsidiary specification for the popular Advanced Mezzanine Card (AdvancedMC®). PICMG AMC.2 defines the implementation of 1 and 10 Gbps Ethernet links on AMC.0 Modules and Carriers. The intended implementation practice will normally include at least one link of Ethernet.

The Advanced Mezzanine Card specification defines modular daughter cards designed to provide extra functionality to AdvancedTCA® cards. They can also be used to add functionality to any other “carrier” cards and are used as the “blades” in MicroTCA® systems. The base specification (AMC.0) defines the Module’s mechanical, interconnect, management, power and thermal requirements. The new AMC.2 specification is limited in scope to defining link usage, management and Electronic-Keying (E-Keying) parameters for Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GbE) on AMCs and Carrier Boards.

“Ethernet dominates the embedded multi-vendor serial interconnect market," said Alan
Deikman, CTO of ZNYX Networks and chair of the AdvancedMC.2 sub-committee. “It is only logical to extend that to the mezzanine, and we have seen advanced development for AMC.2 already” he added.

AMC.2 will be provided free to PICMG members and is available for purchase by non-members. More information, including product listings, can be found at www.picmg.org.

ASI SIG to Transfer Advanced Switching Specifications to PICMG
Preserves access to ASI physical link specifications

WAKEFIELD, Mass., February 12, 2007 – PICMG will make the ASI SIG’s Advanced Switching Specification available to its membership and others by February 2007.

The ASI SIG was formed with a primary mission to develop a switch fabric architecture based on PCI Express technology and has completed its specification development. The ASI SIG Board of Directors recently approved a motion to dissolve the ASI SIG and transfer all assets (including specifications, works in progress, copyrights and other assets) to PICMG.

Rajeev Kumar, the outgoing president of the ASI SIG said, “PICMG's long history, wide membership, which includes roughly half of the ASI SIG membership, and market focus on high performance telecommunications and industrial computing applications is a perfect fit for a PCI Express-based open fabric architecture such as ASI.”

At its meeting of January 8th, PICMG's Executive membership approved the transfer of the set of ASI specifications. PICMG will offer these specifications in the same form as they were offered by the ASI SIG. “This does not mean that PICMG endorses the ASI specifications over other switched fabric solutions embodied in other PICMG specifications,” said Joe Pavlat, President of PICMG. “It means that PICMG will make the specifications available to those who want it,” he added.

PICMG will post the white papers and background material developed by the ASI SIG and its members on the PICMG web site. The Advanced Switching Specifications will be available from PICMG.

CP-TA and PICMG Sign Liaison Agreement to Drive Interoperability for
Open Specification-Based Communications Platforms

BEAVERTON, OR – January 24, 2007 — The Communications Platforms Trade Association (CPTA) and PICMG today announced they have completed a liaison agreement that will allow the two organizations to exchange information. The goal of the liaison agreement is to promote the implementation of open specifications within the telecom industry. CP-TA, in its efforts to accelerate the adoption of open specification-based communications platforms, is currently focused on defining and managing interoperability testing based on PICMG’s Advanced Telecom Computing
Architecture (AdvancedTCA®) specification. The groups will work together on joint Interoperability Plugfests, training sessions and more. They are already coordinating marketing activities through their membership in the Mountain View Alliance.

“By defining and managing interoperability testing for AdvancedTCA, CP-TA will enable a true commercial off-the-shelf marketplace, thereby making it easier for building block vendors to adopt the specification,” said Joe Pavlat, PICMG president. “We look forward to cooperating with CP-TA to advance interoperability in the telecommunications space. PICMG will continue to manage and refine the AdvancedTCA specification and its derivatives.”

PICMG formed the Requirements Engineering Subcommittee (RES) last year to make sure that PICMG documents are organized to be compatible with documents from CP-TA and the SCOPE Alliance.

“We will release our first Interoperability Compliance Document (ICD) for AdvancedTCA in February and welcome PICMG’s input in the process,” said Shlomo Pri-Tal, CP-TA Chairman. “The benefits of interoperability are tremendous. Companies that implement open specification-based interoperable building blocks will no longer have to develop proprietary solutions or devote resources to custom developments of interoperability test suites, allowing them to focus on their unique value-add, reduce their time-to-market and reduce lifecycle costs.”

The ICD will address thermal, manageability and data transport interoperability for AdvancedTCA. In the near future, CP-TA will also address interoperability requirements for PICMG’s MicroTCA and AMC specifications.
